Froze immigrant visas for 75 countries

Where it standsStopped by courtsA federal judge in New York struck down the freeze in August 2026, ruling that Secretary of State Marco Rubio exceeded his authority.

Suspended immigrant visas, the visas for people moving to the U.S. permanently, for nationals of 75 countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and Somalia. The State Department said it aimed to keep out immigrants likely to use public benefits. Tourist and other temporary visas were not affected.

How to roll it backAgency or regulatory action. Reversing it takes new rulemaking or policy guidance, usually with notice and comment, and it must hold up in court.
